My grandchildren and I hiked West Rattlesnake in Sandwich NH yesterday. There are some places that just bring me joy and a true sense of being in the moment—and West Rattlesnake is one of them. Tucked right in the heart of the Lakes Region, this lovely little hike offers one of the most rewarding views you’ll find for the effort. Plus, with recent changes made to the trail by The Squam Lakes Conservation Society means that pretty much anyone from my Dad to my grandkids can enjoy with trail with me. It’s the kind of spot I always think of when someone asks, “Where can I go to really feel New Hampshire?”
The Squam Lakes Conservation Society have done a beautiful job preserving the natural landscape while making it accessible for all of us to enjoy. You’ll notice thoughtful trail work, clear markings, and a real respect for the land—it’s something I always appreciate. https://www.squamslandtrust.org/
The trail begins gently, winding through a peaceful forest on a fairly even packed surface with steps to ease the grade before gradually climbing to open ledges near the summit.
· Distance: ~2.0 miles round trip (out and back)
· Elevation Gain: ~450–500 feet
· Difficulty: Easy to moderate
· Typical Time: 1–2 hours at a relaxed, enjoy-the-moment pace
When you step out onto the rocky ledges at the top, it feels like the whole world opens up in front of you and for so little effort! If you choose a good day you can relax in the sun eating a snack, watch sunset, or even time it to check out constellations in a sky with little light from nearby cities. The views are pretty incredible -
Below you:
The sparkling waters of Squam Lake. What makes this lake unique to the area is the focus on conservation and preservation that waterfront land owners value (Squamies).
Dozens of small, tree-covered islands. When you take a tour on the lake with the Squam Lakes Science Center you will likely spot an American Eagle resting on a tree on an island or Loons raising their young. https://nhnature.org/
Center Harbor and the rest of Lake Winnipesaukee in the distance straight ahead.
Notable peaks you may spot:
The rolling foothills of the Lakes Region including Red Hill in Moultonborough on your left – can you spot the fire tower?
The Belknap Range including Belknap and Gunstock Mountains straight ahead.
Mount Kearsarge (South) and Ragged Ski Area to the right.
As someone who spends her days helping people find their place here in New Hampshire, I always feel that trails like West Rattlesnake tell a story that no listing ever fully can. It’s not just about a real estate—it’s about mornings like this, views like these, and the joy of knowing it’s all right nearby. If you ever find yourself standing on that ledge, looking out over Squam Lake, you might just understand why so many people fall in love with this corner of the world—and never quite want to leave. And if you’re curious about what it’s like to live near places like this, I’m always happy to share what I know.
