The NH Veteran’s Association is a part of the history of the Lakes Region that many people are unaware of. It features a seasonal campground including cottages at Weirs Beach on Lake Winnipesaukee. The NHVA is a unique patriotic organization, the only one of its kind in the United States chartered in 1881 making it the oldest continuously run Veteran’s Association in the country. The campground/organization offers camaraderie and friendship along with gorgeous views of the Ossipee Mountains and Lake Winnipesaukee.
This retreat was initially built as a summer retreat for Civil War veterans but now the NHVA welcomes membership from honorably discharged Veterans and currently enlisted service members who reside in the state of NH. There are currently 1,200 members afforded the right to enjoy this ideal spot during the summer months. Members can rent cottages that house 12-21 people as well as campground sites with 2 & 3-way hookups for seasonal and short term rental.
There were originally 19 buildings erected by different veterans groups over the past 140 years so it is no surprise that this site is listed with the National Historic Society. 8 buildings remain with several falling to fire or lack of funds for maintenance.
Interestingly, the only week that the NHVA relaxes its veteran membership requirement is Laconia Motorcycle Week in June each year. Rentals during that week fund 80-85% of the annual expense of maintaining the campground and buildings.
