If you're looking for an easy hike with one of the best panoramic views in the Lakes Region, add Abenaki Tower in Wolfeboro to your list. The short walk to the tower rewards you with sweeping views of Lake Winnipesaukee, Moultonborough Bay, the Ossipee Mountains, and on a clear day, the White Mountains. It’s one of my favorite spots, especially during peak fall foliage.
Many people assume the tower was once a fire tower, but this isn’t true. The original tower was constructed in 1924 by local volunteers who simply wanted to share the incredible view with everyone. According to the historic marker at the trailhead, Abenaki Tower stands on N'dakinna, the traditional homeland of the Abenaki people, near the junction of two historic travel routes: the Sobagw (Ocean) Trail and the Awasebl (Beyond the Water) Trail. The land was purchased, funds were raised, and the tower was built as a community project that remains free to visit today.
As the surrounding forest matured, the views gradually disappeared, and by the 1970s the original tower had become unsafe. Rather than lose this local landmark, volunteers and donors came together once again to build the current tower, which opened in 1978. More recently, another community effort removed surrounding trees to restore the spectacular views visitors enjoy today.
One of the things I love most about Abenaki Tower is that it's accessible to almost everyone. The trail is relatively short, making it a great destination for families, casual hikers, photographers, or anyone looking for a peaceful place to take in the beauty of New Hampshire.
